With over 120 kilometres of roads on Norfolk Island — many of them including some rather steep hills — a hire car quickly becomes essential for exploring comfortably. To make things easy, all of our cottages and units include a Ridge car as part of your stay. While you may plan to explore on foot, having a car ready means you’ll always have the freedom to head out with ease when those hills set in.

Norfolk Island runs on a 3G/4G mobile network, with public WiFi hotspots available around the island. However, there are currently no roaming agreements with Australian providers, so visitors won’t be able to use their usual mobile service.
To stay connected, we recommend using The Ridge WiFi to call home via apps like WhatsApp or iMessage. For local calls, we provide you with a mobile phone to easily contact tour operators, restaurants, and local businesses during your stay.

Norfolk Island has a mild, subtropical climate all year round — never too hot and never too cold. Summer days sit around 24–28°C, while winter is mild at about 16–20°C, with cooler evenings in every season. Showers can pass through at any time, but they’re usually short and keep the island lush and green. We recommend packing light, breathable clothing for the day, along with a warm layer or jacket for the evenings, comfortable walking shoes for the island’s hills, and swimwear for the beaches. A rain jacket or umbrella is handy, as well as a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses. Casual evening wear is perfect for dinners out.

A valid passport is the preferred means of documentation; however, photographic identification such as a driver's license is acceptable for visitors from Australia. Visitors traveling from New Zealand require a passport as identification. Those without an Australian or New Zealand passport may require an Australian Visitor Visa.
